Telehealth in Sub-Saharan Africa
The sudden influx of modern communications in Sub-Saharan Africa has opened up exciting opportunities for humanitarian engineering – a field that many engineers associate with installation of water and sanitation facilities in rural areas – to adapt mobile communications technologies to address the urgent health needs of this impoverished region.

NEWS RELEASE Dec. 14, 2005

IEEE Technology and Society Magazine Recognized with Three STC Awards of Excellence in 2005 Publications Competition

IEEE Technology and Society Magazine (T&S Magazine), published by the IEEE Society on Social Implications of Technology (IEEE-SSIT), has been recognized with three 2005 "Awards of Excellence" by the Society for Technical Communications (STC) at the chapter level.

The Awards were announced in December and will be presented to the honorees at an Awards Banquet in March 2006, in Philadelphia, PA.

IEEE Technology and Society Magazine was honored with an "Award of Excellence" first for 2005 in the overall category of Scholarly/Professional Journals. Publications in the Scholarly Journals category are rated on four factors: writing, graphics, copy editing, and overall integration -- judged in the context of the purpose, content, and organization of the publication. Three consecutive issues of T&S were assessed for the purposes of judging for the award, the Winter 2004, Spring 2005, and Summer 2005 issues of the magazine.

The Editor-in-Chief of T&S Magazine is Prof. Joseph Herkert, who is Associate Professor of Science, Technology, and Society; Director of the Science, Technology, and Society Program; and Director of the Benjamin Franklin Scholars Program, at North Carolina State University, Raleigh, NC. Terri Bookman, based in Princeton, NJ, is the Managing Editor of the publication.

T&S Magazine was recognized with a second 2005 "Award of Excellence" in the category of "Scholarly/Professional Articles" for the article "Face Recognition Technology: Security vs. Privacy," by Prof. Kevin W. Bowyer of Notre Dame University, South Bend, IN,  published in the Spring 2004 issue.

A third 2005 "Award of Excellence" was earned by T&S Magazine in the category of "Trade/News Articles," for the article "Wind Energy's Promise, Offshore," by Terri Bookman, published in the Summer 2005 issue of the magazine.

The awards by the STC are given annually to recognize excellence in technical communications. T&S Magazine has previously won STC awards in 1993, 1996, 1998, 1999, 2000, and 2002 -- in fact, in every year the magazine has been entered in the competition.

The IEEE Society on Social Implications of Technology will celebrate its 25th year as an IEEE Society in 2006. SSIT has about 2000 members worldwide. The scope of the society includes such issues as environmental, health and safety implications of technology; engineering ethics and professional responsibility; history of electrotechnology; technical expertise and public policy; peace technology; and social issues related to energy, information technology, and telecommunications.

In addition to publishing IEEE Technology and Society Magazine, which is a quarterly journal, SSIT sponsors periodic conferences entitled The International Symposium on Technology and Society (ISTAS). Membership in SSIT is open to all IEEE members and student members. Affiliate membership in SSIT is available to persons who are not members of IEEE.

The Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE) has more than 365,000 members in over 150 countries, almost 40 percent of whom are from outside the United States. IEEE's mission is to "advance global prosperity by fostering technological innovation, enabling members' careers and promoting community world-wide." Information on IEEE and IEEE-SSIT membership can be obtained at http://ieee.org.
