Winter Board of Governors Meeting

The winter SSIT BOG’s meeting was held at Loyola Marymount University in December. At the meeting it was announced that SSIT membership continues to grow. SSIT will be co-sponsors of the International Federation of Medical and Bioengineering conference in The Hague, Netherlands in June. ISTAS 2005

ISTAS 2005 will be held June 8-10, 2005 at Loyola Marymount University in Los Angeles, Ca. Sponsored by IEEE-SSIT and Loyola Marymount University, the conference theme is Weapons and Wires: Social Implications of ICT and Global Security. TECHNOLOGY, KNOWLEDGE AND SOCIETY CONFERENCE
The Technology, Knowledge and Society Conference is guided by the ideals of an open society, where technology is used to address human needs and serve community interests. Over three days, the conference will examine the nature of the new technologies, their connection with community, their use as tools for learning, and their place in a 'knowledge society'. Awards

Lifetime Achievement Award for W. Zessner

At the Toronto section meeting, W. Zessner received a lifetime achievement award from SSIT and the IEEE Toronto section.

Barus Award

The SSIT Board of Governors approved the awarding of the Barus Award to Dr. Kim Harvin for her work at the Salem Nuclear Power Plant in New Jersey in promoting the safety culture of the organization.

Presentations

Janet Rochester was a national SPAC speaker on the subject of Professionalism at the Student Professional Awareness Conference at Purdue University, West Lafayette, IN. The conference, arranged by Purdue students for the Region 4 Student Conference, was attended by representatives of 28 of Region 4's colleges and universities. Her presentation "Becoming a Professional", examined some of the aspects of being a professional engineer in industry, why demonstrating professionalism is important, and how a new engineer can become a recognized professional on the job.

IEEE Board of Governors

Clint Andrews, immediate past president of SSIT, was elected Division VI director for the 2005-2006 term.
